Greetings to all readers.

It is with great satisfaction that I am able to report a successful
contact only half an hour ago on 47.0881 GHz with Rex, VK4REX/P over a
distance of approximately 132 Km. Signals after optimisation of beam
directions were 5x2 each way.

Rex was portable at 'Howells Knob' near Maleny in the Sunshine Coast
hinterland, Queensland (QG63JF), and I am portable at Eagle Heights in
the Gold Coast hinterland, Queensland (QG62OC).

Rex was running about 30 mW to a Procom 47 GHz dish and feed, and I am
running about 100 mW to a 26 dBi horn antenna.

We believe that even longer distances will be possible in the future,
especially after I graduate to a dish antenna!

Best 73,

--Doug Friend, VK4OE.

Thanks for the encouraging words, fellows - Rex and I appreciate them!

It really was a beautiful day today for playing amateur microwaves - the
first nice day since Rex and my first QSO on the band a couple of weeks
ago (~91 Km) when we established the initial VK4 record on the band.

This is apart, of course, from some early short-distance QSOs that I had
about four or so years ago that were never submitted. Transverter
improvements at my end since then have been (1) the replacement of a lot
of the early parts of the LO chain by a 'ZLPLL' board, and (2) the
addition of a Kuhne amplifier module plus a four-port WR22 transfer
switch which helps a lot on both transmit and receive.

Rex has developed his 47 GHz gear only in the last few months and his
completion of that project has, understandably, been the stimulus for my
putting the effort into improving one of my transverters.

Cheers and 73,

--Doug, '4OE.
